Fit over 40

As we get older, the need for strength training becomes ever more important.

It is widely documented that in males, testosterone reduces as we get older,

more so after 40, the implications of this are not to be ignored.

Low testosterone is linked to,
  • Increased visceral fat storage, particularly around the belly.
  • Reduced sleep quality.
  • Lower mood/ depression.
  • lowered libido and /or erectile dysfunction.
  • Decreased muscle mass.
  • Increased cortisol, causing higher levels of stress.
  • Low energy
  • Lack of focus

For females, aging has different implications, which also should not be ignored

  • Reduced metabolic rate, causing an increase in fat distribution around the abdomen.

  • Osteoporosis and a reduction of muscle mass.

  • Reduced estrogen and progesterone, leading to the menopause.

  • An increase in cholesterol levels, blood pressure and risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • Gradual changes in hearing, vision and balance, raising the risk of falls.

It isn’t all doom and gloom, though. Even though these symptoms can happen, there is something you can do to improve your longevity.

Simply put, that thing is strength training. More and more people are starting to understand the benefits of lifting weights, with progressive, safe and tailored workouts to reduce the onset of many of these symptoms.
